L

Lima (“LEE – muh”)

Di – dah – di - dit

L – Abbreviation for the electrical term inductance.

ladder line –Balanced, two-conductor transmission line, typically with an impedance between 300 and 600 ohms. The two conductors are separated uniformly by some non-conductive spacing material placed at regular intervals. See: balanced line, open wire line, window line

landline (slang) (antiquated term) – The common telephone. The term is used to make it clear the operator is not talking about the phone mode of transmission. Example: “If we lose each other in the static, give me a call on the landline.” See: twisted pair

LCD - Liquid crystal display. See: liquid crystal display

LDG Electronics – Manufacturer of Amateur Radio equipment. Visit: www.ldgelectronics.com

LDE (slang) – Long delayed echo. See: long delayed echo

lead – (pronounced “leed”) 1. A wire or connection point on an electrical component.

2. A probe and the wire attached to it that is used to establish a connection from a test instrument to the point or points in a device where a parameter is going to be measured.

League, The (slang) – The American Radio Relay League. See: American Radio Relay League

LED - Light-emitting diode. See: light emitting diode

LF - Low frequency. See: low frequency

Lid (slang) – A poor operator.

light emitting diode - A two-lead semiconductor which emits light when activated. Often used as a light source or visual indicator. Abbreviated as LED.

lightning arrestor - A device used to help protect structures, power lines, and equipment from lightning damage by shunting some of the energy to an earth ground system.

linear (slang) – An external power amplifier. See: amp, amplifier, barefoot, linear amplifier

linear amplifier - An external power amplifier used after the transceiver output. Linear means that the signal emitted by the amplifier is directly proportional to the signal that goes in. See: amp, amplifier, barefoot, linear

linear power supply – A device that converts 110-volt alternating current (AC) into nominal 12-volt (typically 13.8 volts) direct current (DC). A steel or iron laminated transformer reduces the input current that is then rectified by diodes and smoothed into low voltage DC by electrolytic capacitors. See: power supply, switching power supply

line-of-sight - A form of radio propagation in which the emitted signal travels a straight-line path directly from one station’s antenna to the other. This means for good communication, each antenna should be within sight of the other. See: radio horizon

liquid crystal display – A type of visual display using two sheets of material with a liquid crystal solution between them. When an electric current is passed through the liquid, the crystals act like a shutter, allowing light to pass through or blocking it. Abbreviated as LCD. Such technology is now often used in Amateur Radio transceiver displays.

little pistol (slang) – A modest Amateur Radio station setup with inexpensive, lower-power equipment and limited antennas. See: big gun, peanut whistle

LMR-200, LMR-400 - Common types of coaxial cable used by Hams as feedlines for antenna systems. See: RG-6, RG-8, RG-8X, RG-58, RG-59, 9913

load - An electrical component or portion of a circuit that consumes power.
